BLOOMINGTON, IN – Indiana University star quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who has become a household name for his explosive play and boy-next-door appeal, has officially signed an NIL deal with Durex, making him the first collegiate athlete in history to represent a major condom brand.
Reportedly the largest sexual health NIL contract in the NCAA, the deal will include an educational component encouraging students to “Play It Safe” both on and off the field.
As part of the initiative, Durex will sponsor the “Protection Playbook,” a series of workshops run by IU’s Office of Student Wellness, covering topics such as consent, stress management, and brand durability.
The partnership is valued at an estimated $1.2 million plus “performance-based incentives,” and was announced at a press conference held upstairs at Nick’s English Hut, where Mendoza addressed reporters next to a seven-foot inflatable rubber bearing his likeness.
“This partnership is about protection, on and off the field,” Mendoza said, flanked by IU athletic officials trying to look proud. “Coach always says to wrap up on defense, and now I finally get what he means.”
IU Athletics released a statement clarifying that the deal does not violate NCAA or university sponsorship rules, though a source confirmed Mendoza will be asked to refrain from tossing branded condoms into the student section after touchdowns.
Durex representatives described Mendoza as “the perfect ‘fit’ for the modern student-athlete brand,” praising his “confidence, stamina, and ability to recover quickly from a tough drive.”
When asked whether he believed the partnership might distract from football, Mendoza smiled. “Look, I’ve been training for elite-level endurance my whole life,” he said. “This is just another girthy extension of that deep commitment.”
