BLOOMINGTON, IN – Legendary rocker Bob Seger took time during a recent interview to talk about how he wrote one of his classic hits at a Bloomington gentlemen’s club.
Seger was immensely popular in the 70’s and 80’s, selling over 75 million albums worldwide. One of his most famous songs was actually written in Bloomington at the city’s only club of its kind.
The song ‘Night Moves’ was an instant hit and propelled Seger to an even higher level of fame. Ironically, Seger wrote the tune at the establishment that shares the same name.
“I’ll never forget writing that song,” said Seger. “We had a night stay over in Indiana and the band would typically head straight for a particular type of bar after a show.”
Seger had played Assembly Hall and ultimately wound up at the establishment.
“Right when I walked up and saw the sign, the hook just hit me,” recalled Seger. “Night Moves, what a great name for a dance bar. I just saw all those girls working hard and the chorus was finished in about five minutes.”
The current Night Moves Manager was working as a dancer the night Seger penned the tune and looks back fondly on the experience.
“He scribbled the lyrics on a cocktail napkin between sets,” recalled Candy Land. “I’m pretty sure he told me I was the inspiration for the ‘sweet summer nights’ part.”
Seger admitted he still swings by Night Moves whenever he is in town, he coyly said, “just for the nostalgia.”
