BLOOMINGTON, IN – The recently opened IU Health Surplus Store is now offering gently used and refurbished surgical sternum saws as part of an effort to make room for new inventory.
IU Health is faced with excess stock of used hospital tools and materials that can no longer be certified for future operation. Leadership looked to the popular Indiana University Surplus Store that sells and auctions outdated campus equipment and decided that the model could efficiently offload inessential gear and hardware.
“We’ve been considering ways to get rid of literally thousands of obsolete items, including surgery worn scrubs, bone saws, and as-is forceps,” said IU Health Bloomington President Denzil Ross. “The IU Surplus Store was the inspiration and the benefit is two-fold: IU Health increases capacity for new technology and equipment, and the public can now tinker with retired by still functioning medical grade instruments and devices.”
Legions of shoppers from all over have flocked to the physical and online stores to get their hands on the used gear.
“Seriously, this is great, it’s like getting a game-worn jersey or a pair of your favorite player’s shoes,” exclaimed Andrew Cardigan. “I can’t wait to fire up my new orthopedic Sagittal saw and do some serious cutting!”
IU Health expects the Surplus Store to continue operations indefinitely given its success. It should be noted that all items should never be used on humans, animals, or self.
