BLOOMINGTON, IN – Former Indiana University men’s basketball coach Bob Knight was overheard asking current head coach Mike Woodson if one of his players could use a “good old fashioned chokin’.”
Knight often attends team practices to visit with Woodson, a former player of Coach Knight’s. At a recent practice, Knight appeared frustrated with the team’s effort and offered to strangle anyone Woodson thought to be underperforming.
“It was a bit unnerving, I’ll be honest,” said a team manager who wishes to remain anonymous. “When you consider Coach Knight’s history of player abuse, it was clear he wasn’t joking.”
Knight was fired in 2000 after allegations of abuse were made public, including a video of Knight seemingly grabbing a player by the throat.
Woodson politely dismissed the offer, but appeared uneasy for the remainder of the practice.
“Look, I’ll forever be grateful to Coach Knight for his contributions to my life and career,” said Woodson. “That said, I think maybe we’ll scale back his Assembly Hall appearances.”
