The investigation began after local clinics reported an unusual cluster of patients who shared no social overlap beyond describing “to-go-or-not-to-go” decision that felt reversible at the time.

“We ruled out dorms, festivals, and city council meetings,” said county health officer Dr. Melissa Harding. “Eventually every interview circled back to the same set of doors.”

According to a preliminary Indiana University research memo, the swinging saloon doors created a high-confidence transmission threshold where hesitation, curiosity, and shared surfaces briefly aligned.

“The average person touches the doors twice,” said IU entomologist Dr. Carl Nguyen. “Once entering, and once while reconsidering several life choices. From a biological standpoint, that’s ideal.”

Researchers have tentatively named the strain Pthirus pubis var. bloomingtonensis, noting its unusual resilience.

Health officials acknowledged warning signs may have been missed.

Emails obtained by The Limestone Ledger show investigators delayed inspection over concerns the inquiry might appear “sex-negative,” allowing cases to spread beyond what one official described as the normal Bloomington margin.

Lovers Playground management said the doors have since been sanitized, refinished, and ultimately removed.

“We remain committed to a safe, judgment-free environment,” a statement read. “We regret that certain microscopic visitors interpreted this openness literally.”

Residents reacted with a mixture of concern and civic pride.

“I mean, it’s gross,” said local resident Kyle Mercer. “But it’s also nice knowing consequences still exist somewhere.”

Indiana University issued guidance encouraging “mindful surface engagement.”
