NEW YORK, NY – VH1 is set to air a Behind the Music episode that focuses on the stunning excesses of popular Bloomington-based a capella group, Straight No Chaser.
Straight No Chaser started on the campus of Indiana University in 1996. Since their formation, the group signed a major label deal with Atlantic Records and embarked on successful tours all over the world. In the course of their whirlwind schedule and overnight success, the group fell victim to the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
“It was shocking to learn about the group’s insatiable appetite for illicit drugs and unquenchable lust for random sex,” said VH1 producer Amy Schultz. “Straight No Chaser come off as an innocent ensemble of accomplished vocalists, but just beneath the surface is a level of debauchery I have not witnessed in my 26 year career in the music industry.”
The episode paints the picture of a modest group of friends from a simple Midwest community that quickly become obsessed with the popstar way of life and all that it has to offer. Drugs, women, men, amongst other vices eventually lead to the near demise of the group. The episode ends with members of the band emerging from a lengthy stint in rehab and ready to get back to their roots.
“We feel better than we did in the early days at IU,” said original member Mike Luginbill. “We’ve cut ties with our coke guy and our one-night-stand coordinator. Here’s to a safe and clean future!”
