BLOOMINGTON, IN – A local family planning organization inadvertently purchased thousands of explosives instead of a common contraception apparatus.
Planned Parenthood has long been a mainstay in the community for issues such as pregnancy testing, safe sex measures, sexually transmitted infection testing, and contraception.
The organization offers low to no cost options for family planning, including the IUD, or Intra-Uterine Device. An IUD is a small plastic instrument that is inserted into the uterus, blocking sperm from entering and causing pregnancy.
A routine inventory replenishment effort went awry as an order was accidentally placed for IEDs, not the IUDs.
An IED, or Improvised Explosive Device, is essentially a makeshift bomb that is assembled with simple materials such PVC piping or even plastic bottles. It has been a popular weapon of war, inflicting countless casualties in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I was totally confused when a military-style truck backed up to the building,” said Planned Parenthood program manager Shelly Hammans. “Then these shady looking men starting bringing these tubes with cell phones taped to them into our offices.”
It is not known exactly how the order for thousands of bombs was placed, but it seems a simple keyboard error is likely responsible.
“I think I might’ve gotten a letter wrong,” explained Hammans. “Hey, IUD, IED, it’s an easy mistake to make.”
Local, state, and federal authorities are investigating the origins of the IEDs and just how easily they were made and transported on heavily trafficked roadways to a widely used organization in the heart of the city.
