BLOOMINGTON, IN – IU freshmen roommates were getting to know each other when the subject turned to prolific co-writers Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison.

Bart Collins and Heath Porter had not met until move-in day. As they sat in their room at Briscoe, they talked about music and some of their favorite artists.

“For me, nothing is better than the Morrison-Cobain catalog,” said Porter. “I mean, c’mon, ‘Let It Be’ alone puts them up there with the greats.”

Collins was not as familiar with the tandem’s work, but acknowledged their timeless contributions as Porter rattled off more and more classics.

“My mind was blown,” said Collins. “I mean, they wrote ‘Let It Be’ and ‘Stairway to Heaven’ in the same day.”

Porter pointed to his ‘27 Club’ poster to emphasize that Morrison and Cobain wrote dozens of hits before their untimely deaths in a tragic plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.
