BLOOMINGTON, IN – The city and campus have gone radio silent as compromising videos and pictures are captured in preparation for the biggest online sales day of the year.
The website OnlyFans has provided millions of users with steady income through the sale of subscriptions to exclusive content, which is often suggestive and sexual in nature.
Bloomington and Indiana University are home to thousands of young people who are used to freelancing and second jobs to finance school and their active social lives.
“I’ve always enjoyed a good side hustle,” said Avery Mann. “It used to be waiting tables or bartending, but now I get to show off my body in the comfort of my bedroom and make really good money.”
The content on OnlyFans ranges from pictures of feet to hardcore pornography.
Proponents characterize the site as an equalizer as it gives anyone immediate access to sell their videos and images as opposed to going through a third party that takes a portion of the money made.
“It can be looked at as liberating or exploitative,” said IU Gender Studies professor Sam Furman. “Empowering literally anyone to sell something about themselves on their own terms is great, but it’s good to use some discretion as the users are often very young and impressionable.”
Fall Break is near and so is Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
As students head home for break it is much more difficult to create desirable content being around family, which is why much of the city has gone dark as users record and snap away in hopes of capitalizing on massive sales during the holiday season.
