BLOOMINGTON, IN – Thousands of supporters of legendary coach Bobby Knight raced to Assembly Hall to huck chairs in his memory.

Knight passed away at the age of 83. His storied career as the IU Men’s Basketball coach included delivering three National Championships and an Olympic Gold Medal.

The larger than life figure was also infamous for his antics in a home game against arch rival Purdue. Knight, upset with receiving a technical foul, grabbed a chair from the bench and threw it across the court.

“I remember watching that game,” said fan Ron Willis. “At first I was shocked, but then I was fired up that coach was so passionate about winning.”

Knight was ejected from the game, but the chair toss remains one of the most memorable moments in college basketball history.

Fans from all over stormed Assembly Hall upon hearing the news of his passing and paid tribute to the man and his fervor for the game.

“The chair move was the first thing that came to my mind,” said Jenna Long. “I drove with friends to the Hall and we just joined with so many people paying their respects.”

It was a vibrant scene but also a dangerous one. The amount of fans hurling chair after chair meant some left with serious injuries.

In the end, The General was honored and the fans certainly made coach proud.
