BLOOMINGTON, IN – The County Coroner announced the morgue will be open for tours and scary story telling the weekend of Halloween.
Coroner Jennifer Daws described the decision as an effort to promote good will with the community and make local government more transparent.
“I work for the people,” said Daws. “Myself, the staff who do the cutting and internal examining, we all work for the citizens of Monroe County.”
The morgue is traditionally strictly off limits to the public, so the move to open and give tours of autopsy rooms and refrigerated cadaver units is controversial.
“I think it’s in very poor taste,” said resident Sheryl Jones. “I mean, would you want random people seeing you on an autopsy table or in a cold metal cabinet?”
Some, though, are excited for the rare opportunity.
“I’m absolutely going,” said Jimmy Goins. “The VIP package let’s you hold a scalpel and you get a free vial of embalming fluid!”
The County has information for tickets and tour times on its general government website.
